Our Trip to Ethiopia, Day 5

Tuesday, July 16, 2019

This morning before breakfast, we walked down the street to Ordinary Hero to see Fray and order some Gabies. It was so good to see her again, and she does such a good work providing many jobs by making gabies, traditional Ethiopian cotton blankets. For each blanket purchased, she gives one to the needy people living in the mountains around Addis Ababa. We got to visit her store last year. It was so good to see her again, and she promised to bring our blankets to us later in the week.

As a team, we discussed yesterday's events and then ate breakfast. Wass drove us to the office, where we exchanged money into birr and then had coffee at Mimi's shop.

We then went to the child rehabilitation center, where there are currently 100 boys and 5 girls. We gave them donations, talked to the director, and then walked around for a bit, meeting children and touring their classrooms. There are so many needs here...it was heartbreaking. Again, we weren't allowed to take photos of the children. One boy stole my heart. He sat in a corner by himself, totally engrossed in a book, while utter chaos reigned around him.

After our time at the rehabilitation center, we drove to Antica for lunch. My lasagna was amazing!

Then, we headed to the airport for our flight to Mekele. As we were walking into the airport, I heard someone call my name. There was Kelli, a fellow adoptive mom who was just arriving back from Mekele. It was good to meet her and talk for a bit. Our flight was delayed, but eventually we made it to Mekele. Only one of our checked bags arrived, so one group waited at the airport for the next flight to arrive while the rest of us drove to the Axum Hotel, checked in, and made calls to home.

Mathewos's daughter Helen got to come with us.

When the other group got there, we ate dinner at the hotel restaurant before going over the next day's schedule and heading to bed.
