Our Trip to Ethiopia, Days 12 and 13

Monday and Tuesday, July 9 and 10, 2018

Monday morning, we boarded our flight for Chicago. After an uneventful flight, we went through customs, picked up our luggage, and waited an hour and 15 minutes on the hotel shuttle. We were tired and a little cranky, but supper, showers, and a comfy bed at the Residence Inn made everything seem better. Tuesday morning, we ate breakfast at the hotel and then drove home after dropping Chris off at work. Malia had decorated the entire house with welcome home posters and balloons, and showered us in confetti and gifts. It was good to be home!

Coming into Chicago...

Back on U.S. soil!

Home!

Our Trip to Ethiopia and Dubai, Day 11

Sunday, July 8, 2018

Dubai is a beautiful city, and today was just simply awesome. Jackson, our driver this morning, picked us up early at our hotel for our trip out into the Dubai Desert. It was kind of a long ride, but it was interesting to see Middle Eastern sights and trucks shoveling sand off the roads just like they shovel snow back home in the winter.

We went dune-bashing over the high dunes, and it was a good thing we all took motion-sickness meds before we left this morning. There were several times I thought the vehicle might roll over off the dunes, but Jackson did a great job. It was so much fun! At one point, he stopped for awhile so we could take pictures and go sand-boarding, which the boys absolutely loved. We rode camels, too, before heading back to the hotel.

Back at the hotel, we cleaned up (sand was everywhere!) and then caught a shuttle to the Dubai Mall, the largest mall in the world.

The JW Marriott, Dubai:

The Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, behind the Dubai Mall:

The mall was HUGE! It seemed to go on forever! We ate lunch at the food court before doing a bit of shopping.

Then we experienced the incredible views from the 124th and 125th floors of the Burj Khalifa, before doing more shopping.

The elevator ride, one of the fastest in the world, only took a minute.

We bought some chocolate made from camel milk...

...and some Garrett's popcorn.

There was a mix-up with the hotel shuttle, so we got back a little later than planned. We ate dinner in the executive lounge at the hotel before packing our bags to leave in the morning. It was a great day in Dubai!

Tomorrow, we head for home!
