Malia and I left on Thursday afternoon, picked up Daniel and Shana, and then headed to Chicago where we spent the night at a park-n-fly hotel. In the morning, Malia went swimming before we ate breakfast and caught a shuttle to the airport. After various security checks, we were on our way to Germany!
We landed in Frankfurt early on Saturday morning, and after trying out a German McDonald's and checking our carry-ons into the luggage storage area, we headed out to tour the city during our 15-hour layover. My takeaways from Frankfurt: the train system is confusing because nothing is translated into English, the city is absolutely covered in graffiti, everyone smokes, and no one speaks English. We saw cool buildings and had great food, though, and then headed back to the airport to try to get some sleep before our next flight. As soon as I would doze off, however, along came the cleaning guy loudly emptying trash cans and driving his floor cleaning machine past me continually. 🙄
By the way, McDonald's in Germany serves cheesecake.
Late that evening, we boarded our flight to Addis. Ethiopia, here we come!
