Our Trip to Ethiopia, Day 9

Saturday, July 20, 2019

After breakfast, Mathewos, Helen, Wass, and Brad (who got to Ethiopia last night) came to the guest house. The girls stayed there with Helen while the rest of us drove to the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus to meet with the Development and Social Services Commission. AGCI is partnering with the church to start child sponsorships in Gambella. After our meeting, we had tea and coffee outside and visited some more.

When I saw this picture hanging at the church, I had to take a photo of it since my mom used to have the same one when I was little.

Then we went back to the guest house to pick up the girls and say goodbye to Helen.

The girls loaded Helen up with all kinds of American candy.

We stopped back at the office building, and while some took care of business upstairs, the rest of us had coffee and tea at Mimi's shop. She loaded us up with yummy things to take home, like kolo and shiro.

These are green coffee beans before they're roasted.

We did a bit of shopping before lunch, and had fun trying to spot all the copy-cat off-brands. There are no copyright laws here in Ethiopia, and Shana purposely wanted to find some of these hilarious brands since we don't have them back home. She bought an Adibas jacket for herself. The shop owners thought she was crazy when she asked for "the fake stuff."

We enjoyed lunch at Sishu, and the burgers and fries tasted so good.

After lunch, Brad went back to his guest house to catch a nap. The rest of us bought bagged coffee at Tomoca for the people back home who ordered some. We then went shopping for leather goods and visited the shops by the post office for souvenirs.

The traffic was absolutely crazy this afternoon, and since Wass had more people to pick up at the airport this evening, we opted to eat snacks at the guest house instead of going out for dinner. We spent the evening packing up all of our stuff to head to Dubai tomorrow.
