Our Trip to Ethiopia, Day 3

 Saturday, January 6, 2024

We got to watch the sun rise over the Red Sea this morning. We arrived in Addis Ababa a little before 8:00 am, and it was lightly raining. We deplaned outside and took a shuttle to the terminal, where we went through immigration. There were singers and dancers in the airport to celebrate Christmas weekend (Ethiopians celebrate Gena (Christmas) on January 7.) It took forever to get our luggage, I had to climb into the middle of a brawl to get carts, and then we waited awhile to get Ethiopian SIM cards for our phones, but we finally headed out of the airport to meet Bissy, Tesfaye, Mathewos, and Helen. We loaded all the donation totes and luggage onto the top of the van, and then Bissy drove us to Ordinary Hero where we checked in, figured out who was staying in which room, and then met with Tesfaye about our schedule for the week. We went to Sishu for lunch, and then Bissy dropped us off at Friendship Park, where we met Hiwet, one of my Ethiopian “daughters.” We stayed until we were about keeling over from exhaustion, then went back to the guest house where we ate dinner and headed to bed.
